Day 28: The comforting voice

It's no wonder that
when I reach the point of needing to
talk myself out of a panic
and keep calm
that I use—
no, I become
that voice,
one that permeated my childhood
in the form of Hayley Mills
or Julie Andrews
mature
and British.
And as I go on it sort of evolves into
more of an Emma Thompson imitation
she is so wise,
my child self
rattled with panic and insecurity
simply listens, rapt.

If I'm alone in the car
I can pretty much talk myself
out of any worry
and it just looks like I'm
talking on my hands-free
to someone real.
